WELCOME to The Art Classroom at
Algonquin Middle School!
This classroom is ready for Art Production! Our class has a kiln, smart board, printing presses, well stocked supplies and many places for storage. Students sit five to a table and all have specific jobs to manage themselves respectfully. Each quarter, students not only produce art, but learn complex problem solving techniques, participate in bi-weekly critiques, learn about the many artists throughout history, and develop their reading and writing proficiency. Also included in the students' curriculum are many sketchbook assignments to increase their drawing and thinking skills. Every Marking Period I have approximately 120 new students coming in to my classroom.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: I am a 33 year old graduate of the Oakland University Education and Studio Art Programs with a minor in Art History. I completed my student teaching in the Rochester Community School District and immediately was placed in a long-term position that ended the spring of 2010. This is my sixth year at Algonquin, and I could not be more thrilled to be teaching here. I am married to Laura Coleman who is also a graduate of OU's (Elementary) Education program and soon to be graduating from the Special Ed Master's program at OU. We have been happily married for almost eight years, and have two intelligent beautiful daughters, Olivia and Madelyn Coleman.

ASSESSMENT and GRADING:
All students are graded on their final product but also on performance and process based assessments. For instance, if Jimmy Brokeherart's castle blew up and wrecked Sally Myartsgone's vase in the kiln, there are still many things I can grade Sally on based on the process of learning and her ablility to talk about her work throughout the unit. 7th and 8th Graders fill out Evaluation/Reflection sheets at the end of major projects and all three grades participate in critiques.
Consistent Feedback for improvement is my number one goal for assessing students' work. I keep a grade book but refrain from posting on PowerSchool throughout the quarter. I have learned that students' effort and work rate will lower [even more] if they feel demoralized with a low grade, and it will lower if they see a high grade and feel they can coast their way out of the quarter.
That being said, both students and parents may contact me to know what their grade is at any point throughout the quarter.
